Blog Post #4

"A balding man with strands of dark hair combed carefully across his head sits behind another wooden desk polished to a sheen that reflects the glow of the lamp. With his white shirt and red bow tie, Inspector Becker looks more like a banker than an inspector. He sets a green folder flat on the best blotter, motions to a pair or dark leather chairs. The boys sit, and Becker leans back. He thrums the tips of this fingers together, smiles thinly, and says, 'So you boys are here to do your duty as citizens?'" This passage enhances my reading experience because it explains the scene in a lot of detail and I can put myself into the scene. It paints a good picture in my mind.

If my main character was in the world today he would not be the same person that he is in the book. This is because he would not have to deal with an unstable government and he would not need to fear the authority as much as he had to fear Hitler and the Nazis. He would lead a nice peaceful life in America like any other kid his age. With what is in store for out future, Helmuth would not really worry. There is nothing that he could do to stop anything from happening because he is only a very young boy.

The characters in my book relate to many other characters and events in other books. movies or TVshows. For example, Helmuth, the main character, reminds me of Michael Scofield from Prison Break. This is because in Prison Break, Michael wants to help people and get them out of jail. Michael always has the best interest of people in mind. This is just like Helmuth. He realizes that the Nazis are hiding the truth from the German people and Helmuth sees that he needs to get the truth out to save all of the people around him. He wants to speak out against the Nazi government to start a larger movement with more people who will share the same views that he has. The author is trying to say that Helmuth can start a sort of revolution and help the German people more than the Nazis say they will.

There is a character in my book that I hate. His name is Hugo and he is a member of the Nazi party and is also serves in the SS. The reason that I do not like this character is because he goes out one night after a Nazi was murdered by a Jew and "synagogues are burned down or nearly demolished. Jewish shops, stores, businesses, and private homes ransacked and destoryed. Jews arrested and trucked away." The night that this happened, Hugo was out all night and did not come home until the morning. Obviously he was out doing all of these awful things to the Jewish community. If he found $100 on the ground he would without a doubt take it and keep it for himself and no one else.

This is a picture of a Nazi SS officer hat. This relates to my reading because the night that Hugo is out, he puts on this SS hat and destroys the Jewish community. Also, when the main character Helmuth goes to the police station with his friend Rudi to help solve crimes, they see four SS men walking out with files in their hands obviously going to solve some cases.

I picked this independent reading book because I knew that it had to do with the Holocaust and Nazi Germany. I also saw that the cover looked like a boy looking out of a very secure jail cell. I also saw that it was based on a true story of a Hitler Youth which grabbed my attention. I have always liked learning about the Holocaust and the awful things that have been done in our world and things that should never happen again. I also read the inside cover and that immediately grabbed my attention. It talked about the main character and what was going on around him at the time. I realized that this would be a good book for me because it was dealing with a topic that I have been interested in for a while. It is a book that I will actually read and like reading. It deals with a hard subject to talk about and a topic I find interesting which will keep me intrigued throughout the whole book.
